Ghosts and Demons
About the event 'Ghosts and Demons'
"Something new and outrageous" is what Robert Schumann wanted to write when he composed "Manfred" after a text by Lord Byron.
The "dramatic poem", as he called it, is an eerie musical drama directed toward our innermost selves. The title character, Manfred, rushes through the world, driven by a curse, and is chased by hallucinations and ghosts. Nothing and no one can help him until, exhausted and lifeless, he finally passes away.
Together with a prominent cast featuring outstanding vocal soloists, the Wiener Singverein and actor Martin Schwab, the Tonkünstler orchestra performs the dramaturgically adapted version under Bruno Weil.
