And yet...is that gently insistent theme that pervades Schumann's one-movement Fourth Symphony not an early precursor of the rhythmic obstinacy of the minimalists, a full century later? No point asking Debussy to provide a historical link between the two: his Nocturnes are a world apart - a world in which obstinacy does not exist.
