ELLIOTT CARTER'S 100th Birthday

The man is a phenomenon. Elliot Carter, nestor of American Modernism, constructor of transatlantic cultural connections, will turn 100 on the 11th of December. In his catalogue of works, the last decade - the zone "ninety plus" - stands out as particularly productive. With age, Carter's creativity has only accelerated.

Mr .Carter has especially close connections to Daniel Barenboim and the Berlin State Opera. For their Unter den Linden venue, Carter composed his only opera 'What Next?' at the age of 90. During this Berlin Music Festival 2008 concert the orchestra and its Music Director will present an excerpt from the latest works by this New York composer, which will be an exciting coming together of old friends.

The Berliner Festspiele bring together a seemingly endless variety of arts and culture under one roof each year in Berlin. It was founded in West Berlin in 1951. Throughout the year, festivals, program series, and individual events enrich the cultural scene of the city. The festivals include performances of music, theater, dance, and literature.
