Ever since Joseph Haydn introduced his masterful quartets for two violins, viola and Cello to the world over 200 years ago, the string quartet has held a special place in the repertoire. Virtually every major composer of the late 18th,19th and 20th centuries left his/her mark on this diverse, lively and still today ever growing literature. Indeed many composers, from Mozart and Beethoven to Bartok and Shostakovich, owe no small part of their reputations to their accomplishments in this medium.

The ensembles presented on this series are among the most gifted in the world of classical music. The program offers works from all periods of the almost 250 year history of this celebrated musical genre.
