About the event
The title of Serenade masks the depth of feeling to be found in the central slow movement of Elgar's intimate creation. Walton's Cello Concerto is full of Mediterranean warmth; music of vivid contrasts, languid, energetic and refreshingly unconventional in shape. Vaughan Williams completed his Forth Symphony just a few years short of World War II. It is an angry and intense work and speaks of unsettled times while also being a symphony of the utmost artistic integrity; a potent and invigorating work.
