The zarzuela had its heyday from the mid 19th century, before the Spanish Civil War and the emergent cinema brought its popularity to a temporary end. It is during this latter period that Federico Moreno Torroba wrote his comedy of manners Luisa Fernanda, one of the most successful zarzuelas of all time.
