Spartacus by Khachaturian: 11th Birgitta Festival

演出简介

The beautiful Pirita convent in Tallinn plays host to the Birgitta Festival, one of Europe’s premier classical music events staged annually in the Estonian capital. Well known for it’s interesting programmes, the festival marks its 11th anniversary with a special performance of Khachaturian's Spartacus performed by the St. Petersburg Jacobsen Ballet Theatre, one of Russia’s most innovative contemporary ballet troupes.

Spartacus, also known as “Scenes of Roman Life”, was first performed in 1965 in the Leningrad Kirov Theatre under the direction of legendary stage director Leonid Jacobsen. A gripping tale of the famous slaves’ revolt that shook antiquity, this production pairs the best of the original with a new focus on contemporary details, stage design, and breathtakingly gripping battle scenes. Fast‐paces, the production races through gladiatorial combat, legionaries’ paradea, the parties and orgies of the Roman elite, and the feasts of the plebeians before finally turning the central event: the slave revolt.
