The Orchestre National d'Île-de-France and cellist Xavier Philipps perform selected works by Mozart, Franceschini, Tchaikovsky and Strauss under the baton of Fabien Gabel at the Salle Pleyel.
The legendary figure of Don Juan will always fascinate artists. The story revolves around extreme urges of life and death. Two musical masterpieces illustrate the ardor and impenitence of the legendary seducer: in the overture of Don Giovanni, Mozart announces his protagonist's final punishment through musical colours illustrating hell. While Richard Strauss, on the other hand, employs the enthusiasm of the orchestra to embody the passionate desire of the hero in his magnificent symphonic poem Don Juan.
Other works of the programme also play with seduction: through Rococo Variations of Tchaikovsky, the great cellist Xavier Phillips will reveal a virtuosity full of charm. In Voce, the short concerto that the orchestra has commissioned from the young Italian composer Matteo Franceschini, the cello will captivate the audience like a diva on an opera stage. And in Italian Capriccio, Tchaikovsky has entrusted the orchestra with his love for Italy and his memories of the city on the seven hills.
