Although it is one of his masterpieces today, Bruckner's Eighth Symphony was initially considered to be a failure by the public and his friends alike.

It was the very first symphony on this scale. Mahler would later adopt this approach, but in Bruckner’s time, the enormity of the structure, the great complexity and depth of the musical ideas, and the typical way of dissecting a theme to the marrow, all seemed too new. Today, this symphony is often referred to as the ‘crowning achievement of 19th century music’, and due to its eschatological theme, it is also referred to as ‘Apocalyptic’. As Bruckner himself admitted, “My Eighth is a mystery.”
