Probably no single composer has influenced the course of musical history more than Ludwig van Beethoven. His evolving style had a profound effect on the musicians of his own time, and his musical legacy continues to influence musicians today, while also enjoying a great public appeal. Born in 1770, Beethoven is considered a representative of the classical era. In many ways he was a precursor of romanticism, his life bridging two centuries almost equally, and his spirit seemingly more in tune with the catechism that followed the French Revolution than with the contentment of the Age of Reason. While he injected a new freedom into existing classical composition forms, Beethoven continued to adhere to them. Beethoven's great contribution to the evolution of music composition was to carry forward the tradition of Mozart and Haydn, building on the structures they had developed and elevating them to new heights of power and expressiveness.
